Malyutin was inspired by Japanese wooden dolls representing the seven gods of fortune, where figures were nested inside each other. He adapted this idea to create the first Russian matryoshka, which depicted a peasant family. The first set consisted of eight dolls—seven girls, a boy, and the smallest doll—a baby.
