The fifth part of the «Traditional Women's Costumes of Belarus» collection by Brest Souvenir Factory – a set of five matryoshka dolls. This time, we travel to the eastern part of the country – the Dnieper region (Podniepraviе). Each nesting doll is handcrafted from natural wood and hand-painted in a traditional Belarusian style.

The Neglyubsky costume consists of a shirt, skirt ("paneva"), apron, maiden skirt ("kalyshka"), and a headscarf ("platok"). The costume was complemented by various decorations, including ribbons, beads, goose down, and embroidered ornaments. The Neglyubsky style retained its archaic features for centuries and only in the 1920s incorporated a sleeveless vest ("karset").

Elements of the Neglyubsky Costume

  • Shirt (рубаха) – A white linen blouse decorated with rhythmic red stripes and rich embroidery covering the sleeves in a vertical-horizontal pattern. The lower edge is adorned with a horizontal embroidered band, while the back of the shirt features two vertical embroidered patterns at the hem.
  • Skirt ("paneva") – Worn with the back part tucked into the waistband, ensuring that the hanging corner aligns with the embroidered band of the shirt. Weaving the paneva required exceptional skill, making it the most technically complex part of the ensemble.
  • Wide Belt (пояс) – Crafted using a special weaving technique with decorative fringe ("pupla") at the bottom. In summer variations, the costume often featured black and white color schemes.
  • Headscarf ("platok") – A woven scarf with traditional ornaments, tied in the style of an Eastern turban.

The largest nesting doll in the set stands at 9.5 cm (3.7 inches), while the smallest measures just 2.2 cm (0.9 inches).
