Introduction

Straw weaving is one of the most unique folk crafts of Belarus. Straw was used to create toys, decorative and household items, as well as ritual objects. That is why this craft held special significance for our ancestors. In modern times, straw weaving has been included in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Brest Souvenir Factory proudly supports and revives this art, preserving its authenticity and beauty.

Origins of the Craft

Straw weaving appeared in Belarus several centuries ago, most likely as early as the Middle Ages. Peasants used straw as an accessible natural material to make household items, decorations, and protective charms.

The technique was passed down from generation to generation, gradually enriched with new methods and forms. Today, this craft has not lost its relevance: straw weaving continues to live in thematic museums, clubs, and workshops. However, it has lost its practical function, and such decorations have become popular souvenirs and decorative items.

Variety of Techniques and Items

Belarusian artisans use different techniques for working with straw:

  • Spiral weaving – for strong baskets and chests;
  • Volumetric weaving – for creating figurines and decorative elements;
  • Flat weaving – for panels and rugs.

Due to its durability, rye straw is most suitable for work, while oat or wheat straw is used less frequently. Before crafting, the straw is thoroughly cleaned, dried, bleached, lightly burned to achieve shades from golden to dark brown, and sometimes dyed with natural pigments. It is then cut into small elements – squares, diamonds, strips – that are assembled into patterns.

The ornaments are very diverse: depictions of animals, birds, plants, and traditional symbols. Items were used to decorate furniture, boxes, panels, and even wall rugs, which shows the wide application of this craft.

The Role of the Brest Souvenir Factory

Since the 1960s, the Brest Souvenir Factory has been a center for preserving and developing this craft. At that time, about 30 straw weaving masters worked here, which speaks to the importance and development of this art at the factory. The revival of straw weaving was initiated by Vera Gavrilyuk.

Today, the factory no longer produces new straw items, but you can always visit the museum exhibition and explore the collection that reflects the traditions of Belarusian folk art.

Conclusion

Straw weaving is an important part of Belarusian cultural heritage that has been recognized internationally. The Brest Souvenir Factory continues to preserve and develop this art, turning a simple natural material into true works of art.
