Master Class in Ogovo Painting on a Decorative Box

Paint a decorative box in the tradition of West Polesie

Ogovo painting is the language of Polesie transferred into an object: into rhythm, color, repetition and a filled ornamental composition.

During the master class, you will discover this tradition and paint a wooden decorative box with your own hands – not as a random drawing, but as a meaningful pattern.

A Little History

Ogovo painting belongs to the tradition of West Polesie and continues to live today in collections, souvenirs and our master class.

Painted chests and Ogovo painting
Painted chests and Ogovo painting

Ogovo painting belongs to the tradition of West Polesie. Its name is connected with the village of Ogovo, where the craft of painted chests was well developed. Yet the tradition itself is wider than one village – it is part of the cultural code of Polesie.

A chest was an important object in the home. It held dowry items, fabric, clothing and family valuables. It was painted not only for beauty. The ornament helped create a sense of order, harmony and stability. Repetition, symmetry, filled space, flowers, lines, waves and dots formed a whole system.

In 1978, a production site of Brest Souvenir Factory was opened in the village of Ogovo. Based on traditional chests, the factory began creating painted decorative boxes and ornamental objects. This is how the old language of chests continued in new forms.

Today, this tradition lives on in the collections, souvenirs and master classes of Brest Souvenir Factory.

How the Master Class Works

Participants do not simply paint an object – they gradually understand how traditional ornament is built, from the first elements to the finished composition.

01

Introduction

We briefly tell the story of Ogovo painting: where it came from, why it is connected with chests and how it differs from an ordinary decorative pattern.

02

Elements

The master shows flowers, lines, waves, dots, rhythm, repetition and filled space – the foundation of the future composition.

03

Painting

Participants choose colors and build their own ornament – not by copying a finished sample, but by relying on the tradition.

04

Finished Work

The painting is covered with a protective layer, and the finished decorative box is carefully packed so it is easy to take with you.

What You Receive

The result is your own handmade work, an introduction to tradition and a beautiful souvenir from Brest.

  • your own hand-painted decorative box
  • an introduction to the tradition of Ogovo painting
