Ogovo Painting The Living Language of Belarusian Polesie
Ogovo Painting is a distinctive form of decorative painting that developed from the tradition of painted chests in Western Polesie. It is more than ornament: it is an entire visual language in which flowers, lines, waves, wreaths and richly filled surfaces expressed harmony, prosperity, protection, family happiness and the bond between generations.
These patterns once decorated skryni and kufary — large wooden chests used to keep dowries, family belongings and the memories of a home. Today, Brest Souvenir Factory continues this tradition through contemporary objects, collections and workshops.
At the heart of Ogovo Painting is a floral and botanical ornament arranged into a complete composition. Almost no empty space was left: every part of the surface was filled with rhythm, colour and movement.
The patterns were painted by hand. The surface was prepared, coated with a light base, divided into sections and filled with ornament. The palette used expressive colours: ochre, vermilion, cornflower blue, green, burgundy and black. The technique itself was accessible, yet rich in meaning — passed down as a tradition, a skill and a sense of beauty.
Ogovo Painting is not connected only with the village of Ogovo. Ogovo was one of the strongest centres of the tradition and gave it its name, but the painting belongs to the broader cultural landscape of Western Polesie.
Ogovo Chests
Ogovo chests are a distinctive feature of traditional life in Polesie. In rural culture from the late 19th to the mid-20th century, they were far more than storage. They held dowries, family memories and wishes for a good life.
A chest accompanied a young woman into marriage: her dowry was carried in it, and the chest itself became a prominent part of the wedding ritual. Its appearance reflected the family’s prosperity, taste and diligence. Later, it remained in the home as a symbol of family lineage and domestic life — an object with a soul.

How We Preserve the Tradition
For many years, Brest Souvenir Factory has returned to Ogovo Painting, adapting its motifs to new forms. An important chapter in the factory’s history was also connected with the village of Ogovo itself: a branch of Brest Souvenir Factory operated there, allowing the tradition to continue in factory-made pieces.
Today, we continue to preserve this tradition. Ogovo Painting is not our only direction, but it is one of the deepest symbols of our brand. Through it, the connection with Belarusian Polesie, painted chests, hand painting and traditional decorative arts is especially clear.
