The masters of the Brest Souvenir Factory handcraft vibrant, beautiful, and high-quality traditional Russian toys – nesting dolls, or «matryoshkas». Only safe, eco-friendly materials are used in their creation. The base is carved from wood, then coated with water-based paints and non-allergenic varnish. The result is original gifts to suit any taste.

Although the matryoshka is considered a traditional Russian souvenir, the most popular one among both Russians and foreigners, not everyone knows the history of its creation. The story of the matryoshka began in the 1890s when Savva Mamontov's Moscow Toy Workshop, «Children's Education», received several dolls from Japan that nested within each other, with the largest one depicting the Buddhist saint Fukurum. It is believed that this toy served as the prototype for the modern matryoshka. Inspired by it, the woodworker Vasily Zvezdochkin carved figures, while the artist Sergey Malyutin painted them. He depicted a girl in a sarafan (traditional dress) and scarf holding a black rooster. The toy consisted of eight figures, each slightly different from the others, with the final, eighth one depicting a swaddled infant. The name Matrena was common at that time – and that's how the beloved Matryoshka was born.

On October 24, 1900, visitors at the World Expo in Paris first saw the unusual toy. The charming and amusing «surprise» doll won a prestigious bronze medal and quickly became popular. This day is officially considered the birthday of the round-faced doll with the scarf.

This set of seven dolls was created by our masters based on the very first matryoshka. These wooden dolls will captivate both adult collectors and young enthusiasts who enjoy playing with unique toys. The largest matryoshka in the set measures 5.3 inches, and the smallest – only 0.9 inches. An interesting fact: you won't find two identical matryoshkas anywhere in the world, as each one is hand-painted by artists.
