Straw Inlay
Some materials retain their beauty for centuries. One of them is ordinary rye straw. In the hands of a master, it becomes delicate golden elements that form ornaments, pictures and decorative compositions. As the light changes, the straw seems to come alive, making each piece look different from every angle.
In Belarus, working with straw is more than a craft. It is part of the national culture, rooted in respect for the land, natural materials and handwork. For generations, masters have passed down the secrets of preparing straw, creating ornaments and building artistic compositions, transforming a simple plant into a genuine work of art.
The Tradition of Brest Souvenir Factory
Since its founding in 1953, Brest Souvenir Factory has brought together different forms of Belarusian decorative and applied art. Artists, woodcarvers, painters and straw-inlay specialists worked here.
Straw-decorated boxes, panels, decorative objects and souvenirs were produced both in small series and as individual artistic projects. Many pieces were made by hand, with each master bringing a personal sense of composition and understanding of the material to the work. As a result, the factory’s products became known far beyond Brest.
From History to the Present
Today, Brest Souvenir Factory continues to work with straw inlay, preserving this craft as part of its artistic heritage. We do not simply seek to reproduce objects from the past. Our masters use traditional techniques to create contemporary souvenirs that retain the character of Belarusian craftsmanship and the natural beauty of traditional materials.
Every piece begins in the same way — with wood, natural straw and handwork. It ends as an object that carries the warmth of the master’s hands and continues the story of the factory, which began more than seventy years ago.
